Spring is Here

A couple weeks ago we took a family ride on the newly paved stretch of the Fish Lake Trail.  We've used the older stretch of the trail quite a bit over the years and this is a welcome edition.  The trail was busier than I had anticipated but was nice for the kids and much longer than the older stretch.

This weekend I took in some snow camping with the local mountaineer group.  It was fun.  Camping in snow is nice because there are no bugs or dirt and you can build things with the snow.  I dug a boot pit at the door of the tent that was very convenient.  

 The lack of snow this winter has made it easier to be ready for Spring and getting out.  We have plans to start backpacking again, with the kids.  Hopefully it works out.

Vacation Projects

I had some time off a couple weeks ago and got a lot of little projects done.  Cleaning and organizing the garage after installing some ceiling shelves was the most practical project, but wasn't quite photo worthy.  My favorite project was the coat hook rack I made.  I "reclaimed" some wood from a pile of garbage on our neighbor's property that had been dumped there years ago (gotta love that about the outskirts of Spokane), cleaned it up, trimmed it down, and mounted some nice hooks I picked up at Restoration Hardware.  I think it turned out better than expected and is quite practical.  In the hallway from the garage the kids tend to dump their school backpacks and hang their coats on the floor.  Now they each have a hook and I don't trip over their stuff when I get home after them.

I also got lots of little errands run, spent some time in Ansel's class, bought a truck, and finished my taxes.  Among other things.
   

Boise Getaway

Here is a summary of our quick trip to Boise this past weekend:

A few highlights to consider:

1.  It is now clear to me that the kids will last about 2 hours in snow before they need a break.  At two hours into our hike they were hungry and "Bogus Basin"  quickly changed to "Bonus Bacon."

2.  The sand dunes were steeper than they look.  Notice the stream of sand running down the dune on the scene where the stiff lanky guy runs down and does some fake falls (Somehow on the walk up I developed an irrational fear that when I ran down I would face plant and snap my neck and my children would find me lifeless, foaming at the mouth.  I didn't want that to happen).

3.  Ansel dreams of one day being on "America's Funniest Home Videos" and will at times do fake falls and ask if it qualifies to be on the show.  Well, riding the stationary bike gets very close.

4.  The music is near-local hero Josh Ritter.  A good song for Spring and, while technically still Winter, it has felt like Spring in many ways for some time.

5.  The Idaho State Capitol was recently renovated and looks nice.

6.  Someday I'll have time to blog, edit home movies, and prepare my taxes--but not today.

Year End Wrap Up

Sure it's February, but it's not too late to blog about last year.  And it's not too late to fulfill long supressed good blog intentions.  Browsing through my cell phone photos the other day I was impressed with how many photos were taken with a brief post in mind, blog posts that never happened because I either decided the topic was kind of lame or because I didn't have time to sit down and write, or I just plain forgot and the moment was gone.  So I've decided to create the world's longest photo based blog post in history by cleaning up the entire album on my cell phone from the past year, in reverse order.

Looking through the photos, a few ideas crossed my mind.  First, I was struck by the amount of fun stuff we got to do this year.  I was lamenting to Vanessa the other night when our weekend plans changed about three times at the last minute, keeping me home doing little scut projects instead of being outside doing something "epic."  Turns out we do get out from time to time and I really have no ground to complain.  Second, while I always appreciate the photo documentation and quality of photos that Vanessa produces in our travels and adventures, there is something soulful and important about spontaneous cell phone photos.  I anticipate these pictures will be as fun to look at in twenty years as Vanessa's really good photos.

So because I see this as my online journal, centered exclusively around the author as blogs are wont to be, I will take no offense if you forgo this entry, because I'm certain you have better things to do.

Anyway, here goes.

  

This is last weekend during our family walk along a stretch of the centennial trail.  Ansel is taking after Emmy in wanting to climb, even if it is loose mud.

 

Here is the annual Christmas tree cleanup, also this past weekend.  Last year I had to dig through a foot of snow to get to the fire pit.  This year, unfortunately, I didn't.

  

A minor interest of mine is exploring different parts of town, discovering little things I've missed before.  I picked up some good ingredients here a few weeks ago and brewed up some mean Pad Thai this evening.  Did you know there are two Asian grocery stores in Spokane?  
 

I also visited this place recently for lunch.  I don't eat burgers too often these days since I'm trying to eat less fat, but thought I'd give this place a try.  It reminded me of Bob's Big Boy from when I was a kid, with extra relish in the sauce.  Not bad but I can live without it.  I also like the sign.
 

The other day, after snowshoeing up Mt. Spokane, Vanessa and I ate lunch at the Milk Bottle and hit up a few antique shops on North Monroe.  This was one of the antiques.  When I saw it I had a reflex to bust out some mean air guitar.  If only there was a vintage tennis racket nearby to use as a prop.
 

Kind of along the same line as the "Ron's Burger's" sign, I like finding unique stuff like this around town.  I get the impression this was sitting right where it is now during the '74 Expo.

So Vanessa never really blogged about our trip to Utah over the holidays.  These alpenhorns were seen at Solitude playing "Tequila."  Which reminds me, our kids watched Pee Wee's Big Adventure the other night for the first time.  It was as good as I remember.  Paul Ruebens, ha.

This was a couple days earlier at Alta.  This is a repost from Facebook.  Behold the beard in all its frosty glory.  It served me well but alas it is now gone.

This deer track was from the hillside near our home around the time of the only snow fall we've gotten this winter.
 

One project I did this fall was having a wood burning stove installed in our basement so that we could utilize all the downed wood that is on our property to heat our home in an economically and environmentally responsible way.  The point of the photo is to ask the question:  "Why are there so many stores in Spokane that peddle the combination of wood burning stoves and hot tubs?"  I fail to see the connection.  We didn't get our stove from these guys, by the way, but from a store that only sells stoves.
 

I think this was a picture where I was trying to capture Ansel lip syncing to M. Ward.  Nice new 80's haircut.
 

There is a small dot in the sky over the mountain in the distance that represents a hot air balloon.  This was on my drive to work this fall.  It was more impressive in real life.

  

This was from a short hike last fall in Palisades Park.  I've been reading a bit of local history this past year and had wanted to find this spot for some time.

Ansel came on the walk.  He enjoyed Indian Canyon Falls, and a cartoonishly large bottle of soda.
 

Early in the Fall I mapped out a loop south of town to see the monument on Kentuck Trail Rd where Qalchan and several Palouse Indians were hung.  This is a significant part of local history and is the event for which the Latah Valley was "unofficially" renamed Hangman Valley, hence our morbid sounding address.

I saw this in the REI parking lot late last summer and asked myself,"why do I have a job?"

  

Cannon Beach.  The girls on our morning hike down the beach.  We waded through the water between the rocks and got stuck on the other side when the tide came in.  We ended up hiking barefoot through the woods and a mile or tow on the road back to the house we were staying in.  Luckily we found plenty of ripe wild blackberries on our way.
 

Ansel and Haystack rock.  Apparently the dominant geological theory is that Haystack rock came from Idaho about 15,000 years ago, being washed to the ocean during one of the floods when Lake Missoula burst its banks.  I don't know if it is really true but I like the idea.
 

This is my favorite picture from our Cannon Beach trip.  We had fires on the beach each night we were there complete with marshmallows and s'mores.

 

Last summer we had a nice garden and enjoyed a lot of vegetables.  This was one of a few front yards I have noticed on my commute up to Holy Family that have been turned into large vegetable gardens.  North central neighborhoods tend to have small yards.  This one was particularly impressive with tens of bushes of tomatoes, peppers, beans, and zucchini.
 

In August we had a couple cousins visit from Utah.  This is a mandatory photo for anyone who visits the Inland Empire.  I identify with Savanna in this picture, I'm not much of one to pose for the camera.
 

Last July we got this cat, and after a month and a half, finally named her Moky.  While she is much bigger than this now, she is still relatively skinny.  And like most cats, she's crazy.

Our back lawn taking root last July.  It took forever to come in because I mistakenly thought you weren't supposed to fertilize hydroseed.  Once I did it took off and I remembered why I get tired of mowing.

We ate a lot of cucumbers from our garden last Summer.  I will plant fewer this year.

This was on the trail at Brundage, just above McCall Idaho.  Werode the lift and bombed down with my bike while the rest of the family walked down.  However, to maintain my masculinity, I pedaled back up and rode down a second time. 
 

I posted this on Facebook before but I just can't help posting it again here.  Note the soft serve in the left hand.  In Vanessa's defense, she didn't actually buy this.

 

These next few pictures are obstacles from the trail and the then defunct Tamarack Resort, south of McCall Idaho.  My hard earned cycling masculinity was bruised when I chickened out of hitting anyone of these features.  In fairness, they hadn't been maintaining the trail since the lifts weren't running, and there were several logs and branches in awkward spots.  Regardless, I prefer to stay on land.

There is acutally a good sized gap at the end of this ramp and the rock beyond is higher so that speed is a necessity.

This was steeper than it looks, without much room to run out.

We'll have to make 2010 even better.  In the works already are a repeat ski trip to Utah, backpacking in the Alpine Lakes here in Washington, and maybe an overseas trip later in the year.  Plus I've got a whole cache of nearby alpine hikes for the summer and dreams of a bike tour in Canada.  We'll see what happens.
  

Late Fall Cabin Fever

It has been a chilly and dry late Fall.  Last weekend there were single digit temperatures, severe windchill, and no decent snow in the vicinity.  Despite some grand designs earlier in the week, we decided to stay home.  However, by Sunday afternoon, knowing I'd be working the next weekend, I had developed a severe case of cabin fever.  So I decided to take a walk across the hill above our house.

 

A week earlier I had forced the kids to come on a walk with me along nearly the same route.  I was careful not to call it a hike or even a walk so that it didn't seem like a punishment.  Instead I called it an adventure, an "explore."  When they asked how long we would be walking I told them we would keep walking until they saw 10 deer or 10 interesting things.  They didn't much care for this requirement so they immediately began trying to negotiate a deal.  Was a coyote worth two deer?  How much were birds or chipmunks or the moose worth?  Is a rock considered interesting?

Most of their proposals were shot down though I did agree that a coyote would be worth about 3 deer.  Deer have been far fewer this fall, I'm not sure why, and we didn't see any.  So we kept walking.

Over the course of our exploration the kids did discover part of a deer antler, a dead baby deer skeleton, a piece of a coyote's jaw with several sharp molars still intact, and several striped feathers that I'm not sure what kind of bird they are from.  We also found an old metal washtub and a rusted 5 gallon paint can.  They almost fulfilled the "10 interesting things" requirement, but not quite.  As the sun started to sink in the sky, I figured this was a pretty good haul and we headed back.

Near the top of the hill there is a barbed wire fence surrounding several large fields, along the edge of the palouse.  I spotted two hunters mounting a tree stand on the far side of the fence, looking into the forest where we were.  I waved and one waved back.  We were probably ruining their chances of getting a kill, but I'm not sure why they were hunting so close to town.  They even had a four wheeler in case they got something.  I'm not against hunting, but I don't like lazy hunters near my house.

On my walk I was hoping I'd have more success since I could move quicker and scramble across steeper sections of the hill that I hadn't wanted to drag the kids across.  Fresh, untapped territory.  Perhaps I moved too quickly because I didn't find as many small artifacts as the kids.  Instead I found big things, like this felled tree with its bark "skeleton" left behind.

 

Or this lonely basalt outcropping in the middle of a nice stand of trees.  I had my GPS with me and took a waypoint.  I was tempted to make a little geocache, but since it is on private land it didn't make much sense.

 

I also found a little tributary stream off Hangman Creek.  It was frozen (the white stuff is ice).

 

I also came across a short trail that connects a small private road off of Hangman Valley road and S Southfork Ln. 

Before long the sun hung low in the sky and, despite my short list of "finds" for the day, I figured it was time to head home.  I laughed to myself that I wasn't able to fill the required list of 10 things myself, though actually completing the list wasn't the point. 

Ironically, however, on my way back, near the top of the hill where I had seen the hunters several days earlier, I startled a group of about 10 deer and slowly herded them north.  I smiled and laughed to myself again--good thing they weren't here the other day, otherwise the walk with my kids would have been too short and at least one of the deer could have ended up in pieces in someone's freezer.

I sure hope it snows soon.

 

Christmas Shopping with Ansel

Last Saturday I took Ansel Christmas shopping.  We went to the Children's Corner Bookshop which is a locally owned kid's bookstore in the mall that we go to quite often when we're out downtown.  He likes to play with this little mix and match bear that they have open for kids to play with.  Every time he picks it up he has to piece together the following combination:

 

And then he says:  "the bear is dressed for church but he doesn't want to go."
 

Birthday Hike

 

On the first in-town-day-off in three weeks, we finally had a birthday celebration of sorts.  Since it was "my day" I chose to force the kids on yet another family hike.

I read somewhere recently that there are something like 75 lakes within three hours of Spokane.  I haven't done any formal fact checking about that claim, but I imagine it is plausible.  Saturday we took in yet another of said lakes--Lower Lake Stevens which is situated in the Idaho Panhandle National forest (southern edge of Coer d'Alene NF and northern edge of St. Joe NF) at the Idaho-Montana border.

Circumstance smiled and after a rainy Friday, Saturday promised blue sky with a few scattered clouds.  Temperatures were in the upper 40s in the morning, mid 50s by the afternoon.  Fortunately or unfortunately, we were headed up in altitude where the high was expected to reach a balmy 34.

  

  

  

The kids did a good job of not complaining during the hike--even Savanna.  Emmy, however, couldn't help but complain about cold feet, cold hands, and a cold face.  She is forever underdressing and we've stopped forcing her to bundle up.  We paid for it this time with her fragile tears and uncharacteristic frown.  They don't know it, but they're being groomed for summer backpacking (if we're lucky possibly even to the Enchantments in the North Cascades).

  

Vanessa was satisfied with the scenery which offered ample photo opportunities, but lamented the mid day light which is always a challenge when taking photos. 

 

I, in the meantime, have been spending all my free time growing ever more facial hair.  I may start scaring small children soon.

Ansel was very excited when we hit a dusting of snow at around 5000 feet and started eating all he could get his hands on.  In the photo above he is licking stray crystals from his hand after removing his glove.  To my satisfaction he kept exclaiming "I love snow"--though I think he may mean the taste rather than the winter fun it affords.

  

Key to any family hike is good food.  We were prepared for  the cold with our little stove and had hot chocolate and soup when we reached the lake.  Vanessa did a good job of documenting everything, even the food.

Lower Stevens Lake.  There is an upper Stevens Lake that we didn't have the heart to force the kids to go to (it's just past the trees in the left of the photo).  Amazing fall colors with contrasting snow--there's such a narrow window for this, I'm glad we didn't miss it this year.

Later we dropped by our favorite North Idaho mining town, and discovered the center of the universe on a sewer drain cover in the middle of an intersection.

"They Speak Italian in Idaho" or "They Speak Idaho in Italy"

Being novice travellers, this was probably the greatest cultural exchange on our recent trip to Italy:

Apparently "stop" doesn't translate well, maybe it would say something like "fermo" or "arrestarsi" if you are actually required to come to a complete stop.  Of course treating a stop sign as a yield sign when no one else is around sounds awfully reasonable.  Seems as though I've seen that idea somewhere before:

What is the Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow?

It looks like it's the Zip Trip at Spokane-Cheney and 195.  Who would have guessed.

A great rain ride this morning, mostly because my late night efforts to mount my fenders were vindicated, but also because I saw the boldest rainbow I've seen in quite some time.
