Yay for three day weekends! I know some people might go somewhere fun, or throw a party, or go to the beach, but I was happy to just stay home and spend some time in my little house studio. It's been awhile, and I thoroughly enjoyed just puttering. Plus, now I have lots of blog fodder for the rest of the week, I can't wait to share some of the things I've been making. For now I will just tell you about some little necklaces I finished up and listed in my etsy shop.
You might remember these from earlier this summer. I'm happy to say that I finished them and listed three on etsy. I kept one for myself, of course, and another is going to someone who I think will especially like it.
I had all my jewelry/beading supplies out and spread all over my work table. I'm a terrible jewelry maker, but it so fun to play with the little bits and pieces.
I kept these simple, and just hung them from a bit of leather cord. I don't wear necklaces often, but I tend to like this sort of long, silly pendent type jewelry. Pretty soon I'm going to need something to organize all these necklaces I can't stop making. I'm thinking something like this is awfully cute, and thrifty too!

I got this purple-y cotton cardigan at Old Navy (of course!) a few weeks ago. It's comfy and basic and cozy, but it was lacking a little something something. So I cut a bias strip of cotton calico and gussied it up.
I cut the strip about 2 3/4" wide, and slightly longer than the neckline. I cut one of the short side straight across and turned it under. I ran a gathering stitch in the fold and then stitched it down, even with the center edge of the sweater. From there, each section is sewn individually, about 2" apart. I just stitched around the calico strip a couple times and then knotted it off on the wrong side.
It took just minutes, and I think my sweater isn't so basic any more!
Thank goodness for Photoshop, I used it to make several cat hairs magically disappear! If only I could use it on my sofa. Note to self: use a lint roller before taking photos of your clothes.
I also have to point out my cute earrings, purchased recently from SpoolDesign on etsy! I especially like them since getting my hair trimmed on Friday so they could dangle down below the edges of my bob.

That's right, I am reporting the very first recorded terrarium-related injury. I headed out with the dogs this afternoon on a quest for moss. It's very hard to walk through our gate and down the street and leave the dogs behind, because the pitiful barks make the neighbors think we're dog abusers. So I hooked them up to the dual leash, and we set out. And we walked by the Next Door Neighbor's house, when their dog (the same dog that runs along the fence line in tandem with Winston every, single, day) started barking and my dogs freaked out, tangled themselves up and tripped me, even though I was, at that point, standing still. I'm still not sure how they did it. But because I know you all are as excited about terrariums as I am, I couldn't let a little bloody hand wound and a couple scraped knees stop me. Oh no, we got ourselves up and untangled, and continued on the Moss Quest. I just tried really hard not to bleed on it, the leash, or the dogs.
Oh, but I have to back up a little bit. Last night I went searching for some cute mushrooms, also for the terrarium, and I couldn't find anything. So in desperation, I picked up some red and some white polymer clay, despite the fact that I've never used the stuff before, and have never considered sculpting anything in my life, least of all tiny mushrooms. I had to have some mushrooms, you see. A plain moss terrarium just would not do.
Here they are in progress. Those are their spots, waiting to be added. This picture kind of makes me laugh. I figured I'd just use up all the clay and make as many mushrooms as I could, while I was at it. The clay was easy to work with. I'd say the hardest thing about the whole project was the fact that the red smudges really badly, so that was kind of a pain. I had to scrub really hard to get it all off my hands, and you can't even think about touching the white unless your hands are perfectly clean. If there's any interest, I could maybe, one day, post a little mushroom making tutorial. It usually takes me a long time to get around to these things, so don't get too excited.
I'm quite pleased with how they came out. I'm almost tempted to just leave this little fairy ring in my studio forever.
Obviously, I can't put all of them in my terrarium, so I'm going to list a couple sets of three in my shop, and I'm going to give away a set of three right now! Surprise! Well, not right this minute, but just leave a comment if you want to make a terrarium and need a set of mushrooms. I'll leave the comments open this week, until Friday or so, and then choose a winner next weekend.
And now, for the big reveal:
I'll keep you updated on its survival. I hope it does okay. Mr. HeyLucy was concerned that it might start to smell. I have to say, that thought never crossed my mind, so I will report on that as well.
And here is a hopefully sympathy-inducing shot of part of my injury (small, so you don't get too grossed out):
You can click to see it bigger, if you're into that kind of thing. The saddest part about my injuries? I actually fell off my back step a few weeks ago, and scraped up my hands and knees in the same places, and it was FINALLY nearly healed. I can't blame the dogs for that one, however. I'm not very coordinated, I think my center of gravity is all wacky because I'm tall.

Oh it's so nice to spend my weekends in my little house studio. I set my iPod on shuffle, or turn on the portable DVD player, and just get to work. The quilt wall will be getting a lot of use, I hope. I sketched out an idea the week before last, and started playing around with it the last couple days.
It's lap or baby-sized, and I'm thinking there will be three or four more flowers. I wanted to use shot cotton, and originally thought I'd do the whole thing with all solid shot cotton colors, but the quilt shop didn't have any good, saturated pinks and greens like I wanted. I was so disappointed, until I wandered over to the batiks. I don't think of myself as a batik sort of person, but the colors just got me, so I'm giving it a try. I'll just be satisfied that only the background is shot cotton.
I also blocked my scarf, and am having a little fun playing with some Anthropologie-like embellishments from my vintage lace stash.
Since I wasn't feeling too great last week, about the only thing I did was knit. I stuck mostly to my orange sweater, but I thought I'd start a couple other, small-ish projects just to mix it up a little. When I cleaned out my yarn stash I decided I needed to find specific projects for the yarn I have, so now I have a half a dozen things to chose from. I started on a shrug, because I just happen to have the exact number of skeins of Homespun in a lovely, deep purple. I needed a size 10 cable needle, so I was searching through all my circular needles and it turns out I have four size 9 needles and not a one in size 10. I'm not sure how that happened. Anyone need a size 9 needle?
I also managed to finish up the needle books and pincushions for the shop. They were a lot of fun to make, so I hope they all find good homes.

Saturday I devoted my whole day to thrift shopping/antique mall-ing in search of a dresser for the studio. Mission accomplished!
If you'll recall, it was on my Complete the Studio to-do list. Also on the list is Paint the dresser. I'm tired of painting at the moment, and it's been raining for four days, so painting is not going to be a high priority for awhile. I can live with it like this for a good, long while, actually. It would be better if it was a brighter white, to match the walls, but I can deal for now. The shape is just what I wanted, and the size is perfect. I love the handles, and, while I didn't really want anything too shabby chic or distressed, the little painted swags on the drawers are kind of sweet.I also didn't think I needed a side table, but when I saw that little white one for $45 I kind of had to get it, and it turns out that it's really coming in handy.
I managed to thin out my yarn stash, and fit nearly everything in the bottom drawer. There are a few balls of sock yarn in one of the top drawers, and it's so nice that it's all safe from those pesky cats. I decided to display part of my creamer collection on a tray on top.
I need to find some small projects for the odd balls of yarn. What do you do when you have leftover yarn or orphan skeins?
Once the dresser was organized I was so inspired by my pretty new space, I worked on some treats for the shop. There's a couple peepers in there right now, and I hope to have some pincushion/needlebook sets by the end of the week. It's so nice to work out there now. It's a small room (barely 10'x14'), but I've got so much of my junk organized and cleaned out that it's just so easy to work.
And, since you haven't seen this fuzzy face for awhile, I leave you with the one and only Winston:
I can't take it when he looks at me like that. I had the day off today, and spent it in the studio with the rain and then snow blowing and blustering outside, and I had to let this muddy thing in because I felt sorry for him. I hope my carpet will come clean.

I like how this spine came out. I tried something different and inserted linen tape through some slits I cut in the raggedy spine, and then stitched over them all the way through.
I also like taking pictures of the pages. I think this is pretty. And a blank page is so full of possibilities, don't you think?
This book is in the shop.

I'm noticing a trend here at HeyLucy. Weekends seem to be full of good cooking lately. I've been stocking my freezer pretty regularly now, and since the weather really turned this weekend, it's a comforting feeling to know that now on those chilly evenings when I get home from work I can pop something really delicious in the oven and have a nice warm dinner. Saturday night Mr. Heylucy and I made albondigas soup, and doubled the amount of meatballs so we could stick a bunch in the freezer. I love soup season! Hopefully Mr. Heylucy will start chopping wood and we can sit by the fire and eat soup. That is one of my favorite things about cold weather.
I also did a little baking this morning. Since starting my healthy eating plan earlier this year, I haven't done much baking, but I thought it was time for a treat, so I made some bread pudding with a loaf of brioche. I thought I'd savor the last of the summer berries, and added fresh blueberries and strawberries. Oh my, it was so delicious and decadant.
And after baking (I wish I had smell-o-vision for you):
It was crispy on the top and custardy underneath, and even though I thought I was a little stingy with the berries while I was making it, there really were plenty, since they sort of melted into it everywhere. Yum.
I worked on some things for the shop too, but didn't finish as much as I would have liked. Still, there are a few things listed and more well underway. I finished my second book, but didn't have time to take pictures, so it won't be there before tomorrow night. I really hope to have a few more pincushions with matching needlebooks added by the end of the week, as well as three little chicks. Meanwhile, I tidied up a sock monkey I made ages ago and added some finishing touches to her outfit, so she is looking for a good home:
And I really like this cushion cover I made. I'd like to make more of these, with different animals and colors:
The bunny is stenciled and quilted. I love toile, but I think it might not be quite as stylish as it once was, so I think this gives it a nice little modern twist. The gardening scenes in this particular pattern made me think of Peter Rabbit. I hope I didn't give these two gardeners nightmares by superimposing a giant bunny on them. He's coming to eat their cabbages!

One of my big goals for the weekend was to finish all the laundry and put it away. I don't mind laundry, and there's only two of us, so it's not like there's even that much to do, but somehow I always get caught on that last step, you know, the actual putting away of the clean clothes. I wonder what that says about me. Nothing flattering, I think. Honestly, right now I'm pooping out and I don't think the clothes are going to be folded tonight, much less put away, but I did finish a lot of other things, so I'm not going to feel too bad about it. Actually, I mopped the kitchen floor on Saturday, so I'm not going to worry about the laundry at all. Mopping earns you a break from laundry, doesn't it?
As I mentioned before, my Spring Forward socks were easily finished on Saturday. I'm finally getting the hang of the elusive kitchener stitch. The toes on these aren't perfect, but they're the best I've done so far.
I did go up a needle size, from one to two, so they would fit my big feet. I could tell within a couple inches of knitting on the ones that they wouldn't fit, so it was simple enough to undo and start over.
I've also been working away at some items for the shop, and finally got a few done and listed. I'm having a little crisis of confidence. All week I've been thinking of all these great ideas, sketching, making lists and just planning and scheming, but when it comes down to actually adding a listing to etsy I get all nervous and doubtful of my once great ideas. This isn't a pity post, fishing for compliments sort of thing, because I think the only thing that will reassure me are actual sales with positive feedback. Blergh. Okay, I will just act brave and confident, and keep plugging away here in the Hey Lucy workshop. If nothing else, I'm really enjoying myself, going from one activity to the next. A little bookbinding here, a little sewing there, a little drawing and stenciling, and even knitting a tiny hat for a tiny chick.
He's in the shop, all by his lonesome, except for these pincushions, but now that I've worked out the pattern, I'll be making a few more. I think. Or maybe not, maybe no one will like him and I should just go back to the drawing board.

I've decided to embrace my inner capitalist, and start listing stuff in my etsy shop again. I'm working in earnest this weekend on a few things, including some inexpensive items, like this tiny little pincushion in a tart pan.
Since I have a pretty severe case of creative ADD, there will be a pretty wide variety of items, from little quilts to hand-bound books to sock monkeys. I'm not sure if that will make for a successful etsy shop, but I'm going to give it a shot. Stay tuned for regular previews right here in this space!
