This afternoon, EV and I watched one of her favorite movies: Cars. Right now she has two favorites. The other favorite is Cinderella. She has somewhat broad tastes. We also had a little natural-light studio session to photograph some of her favorite characters from Cars:
One of my goals over the next few weeks is to put together all of the photographs and illustrations that I'd like to include in my book. I ran out of daylight hours to get any indoor shots today but I did take a couple of outdoor shots that are potential candidates for general interest and to illustrate some of the principles of positioning or laying out the home on the lot.
The idea with positioning the home is to take advantage of your views, open the feel of your home by designing with your outdoor living space in mind, and optimizing comfort and energy efficiency. In fact, taking these principles into account can influence whether a particular lot will suit your anticipated home. We actually opted out of a larger lot despite the fact that it was more secluded and private. The problem was that it would not allow us to use very much of the outdoor space because so much of it included steep inclines. We also feared that it would be difficult to balance out comfort, energy efficiency, while also taking advantage of the view. We learned this lesson with our first home where we had almost no latitude in terms of positioning the home on the lot.
I hope that last note didn't come across as too preachy. I'm really just getting very excited about the book.
