I poured a tumbler with sparkling water for dinner this evening and while DD and I were making the final preparations for dinner, EV sat at watched the sparkling water. It happened that the water sat between her and the dining room window with the pre-sunset light streaming in. She exclaimed that the bubbles were jumping out of the glass. I saw what she meant when I got at her eye level and looked toward the window. So then and there we decided to photograph sparkling water:
55mm, 1/60th of a second, f/11, ISO 200, keylight (SB-600) behind and slightly right of glass on iTTL mode with a gobo to prevent light from shining directly into lens.
I went with manual focus again, which works best in low-light situations like this. EV held a black reflector behind the scene, approximately 4 feet back. This helped to ensure that the background was totally black. We could have also increased the shutter speed for the same effect.
We also had to add black card stock under the glass, otherwise the water reflected the light color of the wooden table. Then to get the bluish tint, we simply tweaked the white balance to the cooler end of the spectrum.
It's really fun to have a young one help you open your eyes. Next time we'll get some texture and more sharpness in those bubbles.
jumping bubbles. i love it!
very interesting, the set up (lights, card stock to reduce reflection in the water, etc), to get a seemingly, 'simple' pic.
